From the second President Barack Obama stepped into the White House, the Republican Party had it out for him. Thanks to the GOP’s insane racism and their inability to be progressive, Obama faced a ridiculous amount of obstruction from Republicans every single day for the eight years he was in office.
Staying true to the party’s penchant for hypocrisy, Senate Majority Leader Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) just announced that any obstruction to Donald Trump from the Democratic Party would not be tolerated. Specifically, McConnell is talking about clearing a way for Trump’s Supreme Court nominee – and just to refresh, it was McConnell who championed the blocking of Obama SCOTUS nominee Merrick Garland. But apparently, none of that matters now. In a statement, McConnell said:
I noticed my counterpart Sen. Schumer announced yesterday that their goal was apparently to never fill the Supreme Court vacancy. That’s kind of an expansion of Biden rule. You recall the Biden rule in 1992 was the Senate would not confirm a Supreme Court nominee in the middle of a presidential election year, which was my view last year. Sen. Schumer said in the second Bush administration that they would not confirm a Supreme Court nominee in the last eighteen months of President Bush’s forty-three’s tenure. Apparently, there’s yet a new standard now, which is to not confirm a Supreme Court nominee at all. I think that’s something that the American people simply will not tolerate, and we’ll be looking forward to receiving a Supreme Court nomination and moving forward on it.”
It really doesn’t get more hypocritical than that. Not only is McConnell completely ignoring the fact that the way the GOP obstructed Obama’s SCOTUS pick was pretty much unprecedented, he’s dead wrong. To say that the “American people simply will not tolerate” obstruction from the Democrats means that he’s already forgotten that most of the country’s voters cast their ballots AGAINST Trump.
This is truly a disgusting use of power by McConnell, who is obviously riding high now that the Republicans are dominating the White House and Congress. For McConnell to try and hold Democrats to a standard that he himself ignored for eight years is truly despicable – but what else can you expect from a Republican?
