Things just keep getting worse for David Daleiden. The founder of the deceptively named Center for Medical Progress was indicted along with co-conspirator Sandra Merritt by a Texas grand jury in January after a long, taxpayer dollars-wasting witch hunt aimed at Planned Parenthood of the Gulf Coast.
At the time, Harris County District Attorney Devon Anderson announced that Planned Parenthood broke no laws, ” indictments were handed down for two people involved in making allegations against Planned Parenthood.” The charges? Both were hit with “tampering with a government record” and Daleiden received an additional indictment for ” Prohibition of the Purchase and Sale of Human Organs.” As a result of their own witch hunt, the pair face up to 20 years in prison (though both have has been offered a slap on the wrist for their role in a massive lie that encouraged a Christian terrorist to shoot up a Planned Parenthood facility in Colorado — something they have both rejected).
Daleiden and Merritt both felt that the Grand Jury — the group of people who saw so much evidence against the pair that they had no choice to indict them instead of the subject of the investigation — was unfair, and requested a new one in January, but that request was rightfully shot down.
On Tuesday, the Washington Post reported that things are getting even worse for Daleiden, whose home was raided as a part of an investigation — a different one, and apparently one of many. In fact, multiple states are looking into the matter to determine if Daleiden’s actions were criminal:
Investigators with the California Department of Justice on Tuesday raided the home of David Daleiden, the anti-abortion activist behind a series of undercover videos targeting Planned Parenthood, the activist said.
Authorities seized a laptop and multiple hard drives from his Orange County apartment, Daleiden said in an email. The equipment contained all of the video Daleiden had filmed as part of his 30-month project, “including some very damning footage that has yet to be released to the public,” he said.
A spokeswoman for California Attorney General Kamala Harris (D) said she could not comment on an ongoing investigation. But the raid confirms that California is among the states looking into possible criminal activity on the part of Daleiden and his organization, the Center for Medical Progress, which have been the center of controversy since releasing videos purporting to show that Planned Parenthood illegally sells fetal tissue for a profit.
“We fully support a thorough investigation into the activities perpetrated by David Daleiden and the Center for Medical Progress,” National Abortion Federation president Vicki Saporta said in a statement. “As the evidence has shown in our case, he engaged in a long-running criminal conspiracy. His actions are not without consequences.”
“David Daleiden’s lies are catching up with him,” Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Erica Sackin said of this latest development. “The only people who engaged in wrongdoing are the extremists who broke multiple laws to spread lies about Planned Parenthood — and it looks like they’re finally being held accountable.”
Last year, Daleiden’s lies made him a right-wing rock star. In 2016, however, the criminal actions he committed while fabricating the videos are finally catching up to him — and it’s delicious.
