One of the favorite pastimes of conservatives for nearly four years has been to invoke the victims of the terrorist attacks in Benghazi to smear Hillary Clinton. Even though Secretary Clinton has taken full responsibility for the lax security in Libya at the time — even though it’s been proven they were mostly due to GOP budget cuts — The right just loves to call her clever names like “Killary.”
In their shallow little minds, Hillary Clinton personally murdered four people in Benghazi. While that’s complete nonsense and pure propaganda, it’s kept the right-wing rage machine going strong. The master of hate and fear, Donald Trump, has taken Benghazi as his own badge of stupid, pulling it out often to remind people that Hillary Clinton is somehow a criminal.
In a letter to The New York Times, the mother of one of those four men demanded that Donald Trump and the Republican party stop using her son’s name for political gain, calling it “cynical use” of Benghazi:
As Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens’s mother, I am writing to object to any mention of his name and death in Benghazi, Libya, by Donald Trump’s campaign and the Republican Party.
I know for certain that Chris would not have wanted his name or memory used in that connection. I hope that there will be an immediate and permanent stop to this opportunistic and cynical use by the campaign.
MARY F. COMMANDAY
What conservatives, including Lord Cheeto, tend to forget is that Ambassador Stevens wasn’t just a lifelong Democrat, he was a friend of Hillary Clinton’s. Had he survived the attacks he would surely have been in those committees telling wax man Trey Gowdy and knuckledragger Darrell Issa that there is nothing someone 8,000 miles away could have done to prevent madmen from doing what they do best.
Will this heartfelt plea from a mother who has already been through too much be enough to stop Trump from using her son to rile up the mouthbreathers? That’s doubtful, but at least when he brings it up on the debate stage as an answer to something completely unrelated, Secretary Clinton can toss it in his face that he’s only disrespecting the wishes of a mother who has been through what every parent fears the most: the loss of a child.
Not that he’ll care.
