Bill Maher is a master of pointing out the hypocrisy of Republicans. Every week on HBO’s Real Time we can rely on Maher’s unique brand of politically incorrect humor that sends Republicans heading for the storm cellar. This week was no different, especially with the historic announcement and immediate GOP obstruction of who may be the most qualified person in America to fulfill the duties of a Supreme Court Justice: Merrick Garland.
As Maher points out, Garland is a widely respected centrist who values the letter of the law over ideologies who Republicans loved until earlier this week. Chief Justice of the very difficult DC federal circuit, Garland has a proven track record of siding with justice. One would think that would be the best hope a president in his final year with a hostile senate could possibly have of having a nominee confirmed. Alas, it took Mitch McConnell all of 30 minutes to reject Garland, publicly refusing to do his job.
President Obama played his hand perfectly; Republicans called his bluff. They ended up with what would otherwise be a perfect nominee for the bench — as Maher delightfully scolds them for — had he not been nominated by “President Blackenstein.
