In 2012 after President Obama was re-elected, Donald Trump tweeted that “the electoral college is a disaster for democracy.” And in 2016, after Hillary Clinton handily won the popular vote, he tweeted, “The Electoral College is actually genius in that it brings all states, including the smaller ones, into play. Campaigning is much different!”
Retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer agrees that it’s a disaster. The California Democrat filed legislation Tuesday to abolish the Electoral College.
The Los Angeles Times reports:
Her bill calls for an amendment to the Constitution that would end the Electoral College system. Should such a thing pass, the amendment would only take effect if ratified by three-fourths of the states within seven years after its passage in the U.S. Congress.
Clinton leads President-elect Donald Trump by nearly 800,000 votes nationally with a final count still pending, but Trump won the most electors in the electoral college system that is how the country actually picks it’s president.
This is just the fourth time in U.S. history – 1824, 1876, 1888 and 2000 – that a nominee has won the popular vote but lost the Electoral College and thus the presidency.
“In my lifetime, I have seen two elections where the winner of the general election did not win the popular vote,” Boxer said in a statement. “The Electoral College is an outdated, undemocratic system that does not reflect our modern society, and it needs to change immediately. Every American should be guaranteed that their vote counts.”
A poll in 2013, indicates that Democrat and Republican voters feel the Electoral College is not fair.
A petition has garnered 4,363,674 signatures following Trump’s win even though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. While it probably won’t be effective, it sends a clear message to America.
The right-wing site Hot Air disagrees with the petition (the author is a never-Trumper), saying, in part that, we would have to “convince electors that Trump is such a threat that it’s worth upending a national election over it…”
Well, we disagree with that argument. Trump reportedly asked the White House to give his three adult children top secret security clearance. That’s pretty scary. We could list a multitude of reasons. He’s a dangerous man who wants to get his tiny hands on our country’s nuclear weapons. He’s surrounding himself with war mongers and a white nationalist while cozying up to Putin.
On top of that, research has just been published showing that exit polls severely contradict the results of the election.
For once in Donald’s pathetic life, he was right. The election was ‘rigged.’
