The new GOP Congress hasn’t been in power even three whole days yet, and they are already trying to figure out how they can attack President Obama and his outgoing administration.
The Senate Foreign Relations Committee, led by Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) is trying to look for evidence where President Obama screwed up in response to the Russian hacking. They don’t have any information to that effect – but that’s not going to stop them from trying.
On Thursday, the committee will grill Obama officials in a closed-door meeting with them. The committee says that so far the administration has refused to cooperate.
“We are going to systematically walk through the entire Russia issue and fully understand what has transpired,” Corker told CNN.
The investigation will run separately from the investigations being undertaken by the Armed Services and Intelligence committees who will also be determining just how exactly Russia interfered with the U.S. election.
Here’s what we know so far:
The Obama administration has been very vocal on this issue for quite some time – it was even brought up in the presidential debates by Hillary Clinton.
President-elect Trump is the one who has continually denied Russian involvement, while every intelligence agency has said that evidence did, in fact, exist that proved the Russian government was involved in helping Trump win by releasing information from the Democratic National Convention’s email server.
However – instead of focusing on the facts – the committee will use this as a partisan way to attack Obama’s response to the news. That’s what it sounds like, at least, from this report.
How it works is this: the committee can investigate however long they want, and spend as much taxpayer money as far as the eye can see (just like they did with Benghazi in their witchhunt over Clinton) – yet if they uncover anything that’s damaging to Obama – that will serve a political purpose. That’s their goal. If not, they don’t lose anything – except their integrity that is. Whatever integrity is left.
How do we know this? During the election, Republicans repeatedly denounced Russian involvement. And – after the election several Republican leaders still refused to do so – only saying they would investigate due to pressure from Democratic members. Since they have to go after the Russian issue regardless, they might as well try to hurt President Obama in the process. It’s absurd – and unprecedented on an outgoing president.
This is still a developing story.
