New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie shamelessly said that Donald Trump hasn’t kept up the birther issue for the past five years and he was called out for that lie. Christie, a top Trump supporter and chairman of his transition team, said the issue was “done.”
Apparently, Christie is of the notion that anything his candidate has done or said before today doesn’t matter. Donald has suggested for years that President Obama is actually a scary Muslim from Kenya. Conservatives really thought they had something with the birther conspiracy theory and followed Donald’s lead. Trump could not accept that a black man could legitimately hold the highest office in the land. But, Christie thinks we should ignore his racist candidate’s appalling behavior.
Christie just flat out lied to Jake Tapper.
“It’s just not true that he kept it up for five years,” Christie said Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
“Sure he did,” CNN’s Jake Tapper said.
“It’s simply not true,” Christie replied.
“It is true,” Tapper shot back.
“It wasn’t like he was talking about it on a regular basis until then. When the issue was raised, he made very clear the other day what his position is,” Christie said.
“It was a contentious issue,” Christie said.
“The birther issue is a done issue. I’ve said it’s a done issue for a long time, and Donald Trump has said it’s a done issue now,” Christie told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”
Christie added that voters aren’t going to choose a candidate based on the birther issue.
“Let’s move on to the real issues,” the New Jersey Governor said.
Christie falsely said it was “an issue that Mrs. Clinton also injected” into the 2008 Democratic primary against Obama.
A backlash ensued on Twitter.
On CNN, Christie repeatedly claims—falsely—that Trump wasn't pushing birther conspiracies after 2011.

It is 100% true. This is an outlandish statement. https://t.co/UMiUe3SpCJ

Donald took credit for proving that President Obama is a U.S. citizen, then he went on to blame Hillary Clinton. Conservatives have been doing that, too, but Hillary never made an issue of Obama’s citizenship. In contrast, Donald has relentlessly pursued the birther issue for years, just like his pal Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
