The 2016 Election is one that most people want to forget. The thought of Donald Trump being in power is sickening. And it’s even more so when we look at the popular vote.
Whether by hook or by crook, Trump and the Republican Party captured the necessary 270 electoral votes to win the election. However, he is far from the so-called “mandate” his supporters claim he has from the American people.
That’s because Trump did NOT win the popular vote, and he lost it by a wide margin of 2 million votes or 1.5 percentage points.
According to the New York Times, “She will have won by a wider percentage margin than not only Al Gore in 2000 but also Richard Nixon in 1968 and John F. Kennedy in 1960.”
As we all know, Gore lost in 2000 after the Supreme Court intervened and handed George W. Bush the presidency on a silver platter by shutting down the recount required by Florida law, thus subverting democracy.
Kennedy and Nixon, however, won their elections by a narrower margin of the popular vote than Clinton.
Clearly, Trump has no mandate and if the true will of the people were being heeded, Hillary would be the President-elect right now.
But Republicans don’t care about the people. They only care about power and how to wield it to screw over the most people as possible.
There is still an avenue left for Americans to pursue, however. Despite being derided by most Americans as an arcane part of our election system, the Electoral College was designed by the Founding Fathers for the purpose of keeping unqualified charlatans and demagogues like Trump out of the White House.
Millions of Americans have already signed a petition asking electors to switch their vote to Hillary Clinton or abstain when they meet on December 19th to cast ballots. It’s the final act before Trump can officially be the next president. If enough people sign the petition, it’s possible that electors can be persuaded to vote their conscience and reject Trump for the sake of the nation.
It’s a long-shot to be sure, but it’s the only option left short of rebellion to save the country from Trump and Republicans before they destroy it.
