If Donald Trump is elected President of the United States he has promised to deport all of the undocumented immigrants in the country. The Republican nominee has even said he’d send out a squad of officers to knock on doors and rip people, like my husband, from their homes. His plans are reminiscent of a certain dictator who once sent his SS Army out to round-up Jews and send them to concentration camps but right-wing voters could care less–they just want to make innocent people suffer because of the color of their skin. Now, Fox News host Eric Bolling has suggested something else: “deportation stations.”
On Fox’s The Five, Bolling said:
When you’re in a foreign country, and you go to the U.S. embassy in a foreign country, you’re on U.S. land. You’re not on foreign country land anymore. You’re in U.S. territory, right? So, if you set up––let’s call them Mexican deportation stations within the United States, and an illegal who’s here with a family says, ‘You know what, I’ve been here for five years, I’m paying my taxes, I just want to be a United States citizen,’ they go to this island within the United States. You’re technically on Mexican land again, right? You’ve been deported, and you go back into society. I mean, that’s a way, and why is that so bad? That’s a very friendly way and nice way to do it, no?
First of all…What? Secondly…huh?
It sounds like Bolling is proposing that we give land to Mexico in order to create some sort of camp where undocumented immigrants go instead of actually being deported to their country. It makes absolutely no sense. Mexico already has embassies across the United States, so he definitely isn’t talking about an embassy — he has to be talking about internment camps of some sort. The immigrants would go into these camps for some time period and then be let back into society.
We tried that once, it didn’t work out so well in WWII and it definitely wouldn’t work now.
Here’s an idea: how about we just create a path to citizenship for the people who have lived here for decades and decades. How about we keep families like mine together and not rip parents away from their children. How about we treat the newest wave of immigrants with the dignity and respect that they deserve.
