September 11 has become a sort of holiday for the far right. It’s a day when the facts don’t matter and people run on pure emotion brought about by a nationwide remembrance of the tragedy. Pundits on Fox and throughout the Republican party sometimes like to blame Bill Clinton for the attacks even though he wasn’t the president at the time. In retrospect, we can make all sorts of claims about who intended what and what might have been prevented if things were just a bit different historically.
But they weren’t. Not for Bush, who had a number of disturbing intelligence tips leading up to the attacks. President Clinton also could have attempted to kill Bin Laden on a few occasions in the decade prior. Except that was 20+ years ago and Bin Laden was just one troubling individual among hundreds at the time. There are plenty of things that could have prevented the attacks, but they didn’t.
So Katrina Pierson dug up the bodies of 3,000 dead American victims this year to use them against the Clintons in the 2016 presidential campaign. There was no mention of tragedy or show of respect for the men and women who died that day or the families they left behind. Just a weak, bumbling jab at Hillary Clinton. It was a sad effort to deflect a comment Hillary Clinton made about Trump’s lack of rapport with the Muslim world, who we will need to work with us if we are ever going to achieve peace in that region.
Clinton made a good point. Threatening to ban Muslims and taking shots at them to gain favor in this country makes it a lot harder to work with them once the election is over. Contrary to what Trump would have us believe, the solution is not simply to be a huge bad ass and just do the best job at war. Even better than the generals. Because they’re “rubble.”
When asked about how all of this far right pandering might affect a Trump administration’s ability to work with Muslim nations, Pierson entered into an awkward tailspin. She claimed that we had open borders and that this led to the attacks. This is, of course, ridiculous. America hasn’t had open borders since 1921. Being weak on the facts is a common tactic of hers. She famously blamed President Obama for the death of Captain Humayun Khan in Iraq. He’s the hero who’s parents were attacked by Trump after they spoke at the DNC. Captain Khan sacrificed himself to save other soldiers and civilians in June of 2004. At the time of his death, Obama had never held a national office. He was a state Senator in Illinois campaigning for Congress. So no, he could not have played any reasonable role in Khan’s death. But hey it’s 9/11 so that doesn’t matter. Happy 9/11 everyone; go out and blame a liberal for something.
