Fifteen years ago we all sat in front of our television screens and watched in horror as the World Trade Center, Pentagon and a field in Pennsylvania became the sites of the worst terrorist attacks in American history. We watched as the Twin Towers collapsed and killed thousands of people. We mourned for the victims and their families, some of us cried for friends we lost and in the weeks after we stayed glued to our televisions. We asked ourselves a million questions: Would they find any more survivors? Would the people who taped their missing loved ones’ faces to the fence at Ground Zero ever be able to bury their bodies? Would our country ever be the same? Donald Trump, however, was proving to be just as shitty a human being then as he is now.
On September 18, one week after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Donald Trump told a Page Six reporter that the World Trade Center wasn’t great until it was destroyed by terrorists:
Once they get it cleared — and that is going to be a very long process — we will all have a better idea of what can be done on the site. The current mindset is to put up new towers, and I agree with that….To be blunt, they were not ‘great’ buildings. They only became great upon their demise last Tuesday.
That’s right, before all of the victims’ remains were even pulled from the rubble of the Twin Towers, Donald Trump was telling the world that he didn’t think the buildings were so “great” to begin with. Not only that, but prior to these deplorable comments, the billionaire bragged that his building (Trump Tower) was the tallest skyscraper in Lower Manhattan with the WTC gone.
This is the kind of person the Republican Party has chosen to elect as their presidential candidate. A man who turns every single tragedy, even the worst in our history, into an opportunity to promote himself and his “brand.” Instead of talking about ways to help the victims of the attacks, he was talking about his building and how awful the Twin Towers were and how awesome his building was.
It’s almost impossible to wrap our minds around how awful this man is and the thought that he could be the next president is enough to make us sick. This is just another shining example of why it is so important that we come together and elect Hillary Clinton this November; we cannot let this horrible human being EVER sit behind the desk in the Oval Office.
