Donald Trump is continuing his super serious African-American outreach on Wednesday with a visit to Flint, Michigan. However, the Democratic mayor of the city is not amused that The Donald is using her city for photo-op purposes.
Flint, as you recall, made the news last year after it was revealed that Republican Governor Rick Snyder’s administration made decisions that contaminated the water supply of the entire city. In a ridiculous attempt to save money, the emergency manager appointed by Snyder switched the town’s water source from Lake Huron to the Flint River. In doing so, the people of Flint (more than half of whom are African-American) began to be slowly poisoned by lead in the water for three years. When the governor heard that there may be an issue with the water, he concealed it from the public and assured the people of Flint that the water was totally safe to drink.
Eventually, the water contamination was uncovered and there was outrage across the country. Criminal charges have been filed against three state employees — Mike Glasgow, Stephen Busch and Mike Prysby — but Snyder has been allowed to continue on as if nothing happened.
Over the last few months, Flint hasn’t been in the news much but the city is still very much in the middle of a water crisis. Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has visited the city three times to see how she can help, but Donald Trump hasn’t bothered to go there even once — at least, not until 8 weeks before the election when he thinks it will be beneficial to his campaign. And it is that decision that has pissed off Mayor Karen Weaver.
Mayor Weaver said that she is confused about why Trump has decided to visit the city now and why he didn’t bother to tell her beforehand:
I would think, if you are very concerned about Flint and the people, you would contact the mayor and want to have a conversation about what’s going on – so that puts a question mark in my mind that I wasn’t even contacted or notified about something today about something tomorrow.
We all know the reason he didn’t contact her is because he isn’t going to Flint to see what he can do to help, he’s going for a photo-op. Weaver recognizes that as well and said:
Flint is focused on fixing the problems caused by lead contamination of our drinking water, not photo ops.
Trump will likely do exactly the same thing he did in Louisiana during the flood, walk around a little bit, talk to some nice white folks, hand out water for 90 seconds or so, take lots of photos and leave never to return. Meanwhile, the people of Flint will have benefitted not at all from the Republican presidential candidate’s visit.
But he really cares. Promise.
