We need a law in this country that says if any judge does not sentence a convicted rapist to serve prison time they lose their job automatically.
Because an Iowa judge has just become the latest to let a rapist go free.
In 2013, Kraigen Grooms raped a two-year-old girl and was filmed committing the crime.
He was finally arrested in 2014 after being identified by friends as the perpetrator and he was charged with second-degree felony sexual abuse.
“It’s sad, he is such a young kid,” said Tim Caya. “Usually when you hear about this, it is old guys. It makes you wonder what was going on in his life to get him to this. I’m glad I helped catch him, but it makes you wonder about what is going on these days with kids doing this at such a young age.”
Grooms should have been sentenced to serve up to 25 years in prison for his crime. After all, he raped a child.
But apparently, Iowa judge Myron Gookin, who was appointed by Republican Governor Terry Branstad, isn’t a fan of putting rapists behind bars. So he gave Grooms a suspended ten-year sentence instead and released him into the public even though Grooms pleaded guilty.
This latest decision to not jail a white rapist comes after California Judge Aaron Persky only sentenced convicted rapist Brock Turner to serve six months, citing Turner’s intoxication during the crime as an excuse even though he raped a woman in public and was witnessed doing so.
It happened again last month when Colorado Judge Patrick Butler sentenced a convicted rapist to serve only two years in jail, but gave him the ability to go to work and school, which means he can leave the jail to do both of those activities, making the jail cell more like a free apartment instead of a place where criminals are punished for their crimes.
And in Massachusetts, Judge Thomas Estes only sentenced a convicted rapist to serve two years probation, drawing outrage from the victims, their families, and the community.
So this is clearly an epidemic that needs to be stopped immediately. Rape is a horrific crime that needs to be punished and letting rapists off the hook only emboldens them because they think they can get away with it. It’s time for irresponsible judges to be punished for not doing their damn jobs. A law that results in the loss of their job would help. But perhaps we should consider something else. Because if a judge wants to free a rapist, perhaps that judge should have to serve the maximum sentence in prison they refused to give to the rapist convicted in their courtroom.
