With Melania Trump and son Barron deciding to stay in Trump Tower, the cost for protecting the President-elect won’t likely drop once he moves into the White House. According to three city officials, it’s costing New York City more than $1 million per day to protect Trump. Also, Trump has said he plans to spend weekends at their ritzy Manhattan penthouse. It was previously believed that Melania would move into the White House but those plans have changed.
CNN Money reports:
Adding to the expense is the cost of police assigned to Trump’s adult children and his grandchildren, who are also receiving Secret Service protection, John Miller, NYPD’s deputy commissioner of intelligence & counterterrorism, told WCBS Monday. All of them live in the city, and all are entitled to receive Secret Service protection.
“The number one imperative here is safety and security. We owe that to the president-elect, his family and his team,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said at a press conference Friday.
“This is a very substantial undertaking. It will take substantial resources,” he said. “We will begin the conversation with the federal government shortly on reimbursement for the NYPD for some of the costs that we are incurring.”
“We have never had a situation where a POTUS (president of the United States) would be here on such a regular basis,” de Blasio said. “The details of his future plans are unknown, but we certainly know over these next 65 days [until the inauguration] he will be here regularly. The NYPD is up to the challenge and the city of New York is up to the challenge, I have no doubt about that.”
The city has sought and received reimbursement for protecting world leaders in the past, such as when heads of state visit the United Nations, de Blasio said. City records show it received $26 million in reimbursements for such expenses in the 12 months ending June 30, or about $500,000 a week. But the fact that the city will need to protect Trump on an ongoing basis is unprecedented, de Blasio said.
“This makes [previous protection efforts] look quite small obviously,” he said. “We’ll have to establish a new set of ground rules.”
From $500,00 per week to now $1 million per day is quite an added expense .
One block near Trump Tower has basically been closed off and the Lincoln Tunnel was closed to traffic on Friday afternoon during rush hour when the president-elect traveled to New Jersey.
On top of that, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Sunday that a special police unit has been created to fight the increase of hateful attacks in New York since the election.
As for Trump’s fraud case settlement, the $25 million he agreed to pay for scamming 6,000 people, it looks like that amount can be written off on his taxes.
Remember how Trump and his supporters tried to say he sacrificed so much for this country by choosing to run for the presidency? We wish he would stop ‘sacrificing’ now. It’s costing taxpayers a lot of money to have to keep him safe while residing in two cities. This isn’t a part-time gig, Donald.
