Ivanka Trump has long been thought of as the more intelligent, stable person in Donald Trump’s presidential campaign, but on Thursday she proved that she is related to The Donald after all.
Earlier that day, Ivanka made headlines for abruptly calling it quits on an interview with Cosmo Magazine because the reporter, Prachi Gupta, just happened to bring up a few sexist statements her father had made in the past. Ivanka had been talking about paid maternity leave and childcare – a part of Trump’s campaign that Ivanka has basically championed – and Gupta asked her about the time Trump said that women getting pregnant was “inconvenient” for business.
Ivanka partially denied that her father made those awful comments (even though there is video footage of him saying this) and basically fled the interview shortly after to avoid being confronted with the truth again. As her strange end to the interview made headlines around the country, Ivanka followed right in her father’s footsteps and took to Twitter to defend herself (and have a major meltdown).
In the interview, Ivanka had not only failed to explain or take responsibility for her father’s comments, but she also said that her plan to help mothers would only apply to married women – which means gay male couples and single mothers would be completely left out of those policies. Upon facing backlash for botching the interview, Ivanka tweeted to try and put the focus back on “women and families”, and away from her disastrous performance. She tweeted:
“Politics aside, I’m working to raise awareness on issues that are of critical importance to American women and families.”
“Regardless of who you support, policies benefiting women and families are becoming topics of mainstream conversation and that’s a good thing.”
Then, she blasted Cosmo Magazine for actually raising questions that should have been answered by the Trump campaign – questions that are critical if we’re talking about policies that affect women, who Donald Trump clearly hates.
“Cosmopolitan, your readers do and should care about issues impacting women and children. Keep the focus where it belongs – advocating change.”
Pathetic. Ivanka has normally been the only Trump to be able to keep her cool, but she totally lost it this time. Just like her father, Ivanka expects the media to go easy on her and when a reporter actually starts to ask questions that will matter to the American voter, she throws a fit. This was one instance where it became perfectly clear that being hot-headed and expecting preferential treatment is a trait that all Trumps embody, taking after their ring leader.
It’s a shame – Ivanka has many women and girls that look up to her and had a real chance to speak to American women on this subject – but she blew it. Trump is still bombing horribly with American women (Republican women included) and avoiding harsh questions about Trump’s history with women isn’t going to help. Trump’s misogyny needs to be confronted, accounted for and explained. Ivanka’s temper tantrum after the interview just proves that the Trumps intend to keep avoiding the harsh conversations.
