What does an American racist hate more than anything? They hate it when their kids come home from school with their new black friend. They can’t stand the thought of a white-bread American hanging out with some “dirty” minority. The only thing that could possibly be worse in the minds of right-wing, Trump supporting racists (no, not all conservatives are racist but all racists are conservatives) is to date one.
We’ve all probably witnessed it first hand at one time or another. “White supremacy” sounds like an extreme term, but it’s no different from, “he’s a nice kid but there’s no way he’s dating my daughter.” Racism is alive and well and stretches much further into our culture than most people realize. How many sports coaches south of the Mason-Dixon line love their black athletes but would never have them at their dinner table? How many contractors will grab Hispanic men to work for them from a known undocumented worker hot spot but only if they ride in the back of the truck?
That’s why we can be sure that this tweet from Vice-President Joe Biden to his close friend President Barack Obama on his birthday is sure to ruffle some racist feathers:
A brother? How dare he. Brother indicates blood relation. Is he saying he’s related to a black guy? You can be his friend but only to his face. This has to be a joke.
It’s not. Biden and Obama are truly the best of friends. Their families are close. They counsel each other and trust each other’s judgement. Biden doesn’t see a black man, he sees his trusted friend and confidant and respected colleague.
The friendship bracelets, which were a prop for a Buzzfeed video, are another great way to upset the narrow minds of bigots. Surely they’ll equate them with teenage girls and, thinking Biden probably stayed up all night making them, they’ll see it as proof that they are “girly men” and certainly in a gay relationship.
If you think I’m kidding, check that Twitter feed tomorrow or even in a few hours. You’ll see the hatred and stupidity for yourself.
