In 1787, the Three-fifths Compromise was enacted. It allowed slave-holders to count their slaves as 3/5 of a person for determining representation in the House. Our founding document actually codified other human beings as being lesser. Forgetting that all of that nonsense was eventually amended out, our current batch of Republican Representatives are trying to keep the idea alive.
In Robert Draper’s book, “Do Not Ask What Good We Do: Inside the U.S. House of Representatives” he wrote about a secret meeting between several GOP lawmakers and special guests Frank Luntz and Newt Gingrich. During this meeting they pledged to oppose President Obama on absolutely everything, regardless of the issue. Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) was at that meeting. He later described their strategy to National Journal:
Taliban Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban. Insurgency is the way they went about systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person’s entire processes. And these Taliban — is an example of how you go about to change a person from their messaging to their operations to their frontline message. And we need to understand that Insurgency may be required when [dealing with] the other side.
They’ve obviously adopted the Taliban’s style. From the moment Obama took office, Republicans strap legislative suicide vests on themselves and then blame the President for terrible economic policy when they go off. For the GOP to thrive once again, the Democrats would have to fail. If the entire country suffers because of it, that’s a price they are willing to pay. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) famously said,
The single most important thing we want to achieve is for President Obama to be a one-term president.
Since then, hundreds of bills have been obstructed, including many drafted to help the veterans who Republicans love to pay lip service to until it comes time to do something meaningful. The GOP even presided over a costly government shutdown in 2013 and did all they could to hang the blame on the President. Remember all of the stories about evil overlord Obama being mean and shutting down parks? Senator Ted Cruz, who once wasted tax dollars by reading a Dr. Seuss book on the floor of the Senate, said,
President Obama is so fixated on forcing Obamacare on the American people that he’s even willing to deny World War II veterans the right to access the memorial they have earned through their heroic service.
Cruz and other regressive lawmakers pile the blame on the President while the wingnuts that elect guys like Cruz accuse Obama of everything from being born in Kenya to being a socialist Muslim lizard man from Planet X. They’ve even called him the ‘Antchrist’.
No other leader in the history of civilization has been accused of being the Antchrist. It’s a level of character assassination more extreme than any previous resident of the White House has endured. After all, pretending to know enough about ant religions to begin to speak of the Ant Christ is a whole new level of blasphemy.
Now some Senators are digging up things like the Thurmond Rule, which is nothing more than a political tool mentioned exactly zero times in the Constitution these layabouts swore an oath to. This tactical roadblock is being cited as justification to ignore President Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland to fill Justice Scalia’s seat. They’ll probably blame the President for not filling the vacant seat, too. The Joe Sixpacks in the regressive voting base will buy it. After all, Mr. Sixpack knows that Muslim lizard-men will stop at nothing to steal his freedoms.
So far, the Senate has only confirmed 76% of President Obama’s judicial nominees. The judges who finally did get confirmed had to wait twice as long as George W.’s picks did. That was before they started panicking at the prospect of a liberal Supreme Court. By moving at the speed of Ben Carson on NYQuil, this crop of elephant-shaped speed bumps shows a historic lack of respect for the President. A lack of respect that keeps the spirit of the 3/5ths Compromise alive by demanding the President only do his job for 7/8ths of his Presidency.
Regressive Congress-people likely oppose President Obama more out of a self-serving hunger for power than from outright racism. The racists in their constituency, born in a Tea Party and raised on a steady diet of hate speech masquerading as political campaigns, won’t think quite that deeply about it. To them, this unprecedented obstruction is showing the black guy he isn’t allowed to be a full President, even if he was elected twice by a majority of the people. To them, our President still only counts as three-fifths of a man, if that much.
