The Florida Attorney General is finally talking after being busted taking cash from Donald Trump and then promptly deciding not to investigate the Trump University scam.
In a Tuesday morning news conference, Pam Bondi said the entire scandal is all the media’s fault because they put her in a “damned if she does, damned if she doesn’t” spot following Trump’s shady campaign donation of $25,000. She also said she has no regrets about taking his money in August 2013 after soliciting a donation since she hadn’t done anything wrong.
“I just knew there was nothing improper,” Bondi said. “I will never let money from anyone affect what I do. I’m proud of my office. I’m proud of the work that we do.”
For months, Bondi has ignored calls to explain just how her office handled the claims of fraud regarding Trump University. She insists that she “would never, ever trade any campaign donation — that’s absurd — for some type of favor to anyone.”
Bondi then proceeded to lay the blame at the feet of the media.
If I had returned it, you would have reported, ‘Bondi accepted bribe, got caught, and returned it,’” Bondi said. “There was nothing improper about it, so there was no reason to return it.
Trump was forced to pay a $2,500 penalty to the IRS this year after it came to light that his “charitable” foundation had donated $25,000 to a group supporting Bondi’s campaign, named “And Justice for All.” Because the Trump Foundation is registered as a nonprofit, they are forbidden from making political contributions. When it came time to file taxes, Trump attempted to hide the campaign contribution. The foundation denied making any political contributions and falsely claimed the money went to another organization with a similar name.
Coincidentally, the donation, which Bondi had solicited personally, came while the Attorney General’s office was deciding whether or not to investigate fraud complaints against Trump University. I’m sure it will come as a total shock that Bondi chose not to investigate accusations that the scam University duped students after Trump wrote her a check.
