President Obama gave one of the best speeches of his career over the weekend and although he tackled many serious issues, he just couldn’t resist taking a swing at Donald Trump and all the “birther” nonsense. And of course, he did it with all the humor and class we have come to expect from him.
Speaking to the Congressional Black Caucus on Saturday, Obama said that there was an extra spring in his step as the result of Donald Trump’s recent revelation that he really was born on U.S. soil after all. The president added sarcastically that with so many other issues facing him as the leader of the free world, the “birther” conspiracy really has been right up at the top of his list of concerns.
There’s an extra spring in my step tonight,” Obama said. “I don’t know about you guys, but I am so relieved that the whole birther thing is over. I mean, ISIL, North Korea, poverty, climate change, none of those things weighed on my mind like the validity of my birth certificate.”
Obama said how glad he was that this whole mess got figured out with “just 124 days to go” in his presidency. “Under the wire, we got that resolved,” he joked, pointing out that clearing this up will give a nice “boost for me in the home stretch.”
In other news, the world is round, not flat,” he added.
For years, Donald Trump has been fanning the flames of the conspiracy theory that Obama was born in Kenya, or some other foreign country, rather than Hawaii. Finally, on Friday morning, he conceded that the nation’s first black president was actually born on American soil. What he didn’t do, though, was apologize for championing the racist cause for so long. Following the GOP nominee’s press conference, the Congressional Black Caucus held a press conference of their own on Friday afternoon and condemned Trump as “a two-bit racial arsonist” and a “disgusting fraud” who has “lived a life of bigotry”
