The White House took part in all the usual celebrations on the Fourth of July, but Independence Day has even more meaning to the first family. They were also celebrating Malia’s birthday. That’s right, the Obamas’ oldest daughter was born on July 4th, as well. Malia turned 18 this year, crossing the threshold into adulthood before our very eyes.
The Fourth of July festivities at the White House included a first class musical event that featured performances by pop stars like Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe, but it was the unexpected cameo at the end by President Obama that stole the show.
At the end of all the Independence Day celebrations, after the show had concluded, the president was giving brief remarks to those who were gathered in the East Room of the White House. He thanked the talented musicians for their performances and then thanked the military families who had attended the event. And naturally, he spoke about the importance of this date to the United States of America.
President Obama then announced to the crowd that he had one last duty to perform before the night came to an end.
And just because it’s the job of a father to embarrass his daughters, I’ve got one last job. It just so happens that we celebrate our country’s birthday on the same day that we celebrate my oldest daughter’s birthday. So just a quick Happy Birthday for Malia.
And then the President of the United States, who in that moment was just a father who loves his daughter, did his best to embarrass his daughter by singing Happy Birthday to her. The entire room quickly joined in. But at the end, she didn’t look as embarrassed as her dad had hoped and was all smiles as she ran up on stage to hug him.
