Over the past few years, social media bullying has become a huge problem with school aged children across the country. Bullying has become such a widespread problem in the age of the internet that schools have to actually talk to kids about it and rightfully so. Over the last decade or so we have heard too many stories about too many kids killing themselves because they were so depressed they thought ending their lives was the only way to stop their classmates from making fun of them. However, it is not just kids who log onto social media sites and act like giant dickbags; the Republican Party has actually elected an adult who does the very same thing.
Long before Donald Trump decided he wanted to run for president in 2016, he was perhaps the most well-known Twitter bully in the country. The billionaire often mocked and called people names online. All of Trump’s Twitter attacks have been disgusting but one of them stands out as especially vile.
During the 2014 Academy Awards, then 81-year-old actress Kim Novak was the target of Donald Trump’s childish, schoolyard attacks:
Novak was presenting an award at the ceremony and had a hard time speaking due to an anxiety pill she’d taken earlier in the day. The actress also had fat injections in her face because she wanted to feel good about herself when she stood in front of millions of people — completely understandable, everyone wants to feel good. Unfortunately, instead of calling her beautiful, Donald Trump mocked the elderly woman because that is the kind of person he is.
A few days after the award ceremony Novak spoke out about how hurt she was by Trump’s (and other people’s) comments, saying:
It really did throw me into a tailspin and it hit me hard…For days, I didn’t leave the house, and it got to me like it gets kids and teenagers.”
Novak went on to say that she has a “right to look as good as they can, and I feel better when I look better” and “I will no longer hold myself back from speaking out against bullies. We can’t let people get away with affecting our lives.”
Two years later, Donald Trump hasn’t changed at all. The Republican presidential candidate still makes horrible comments about people online and behaves like a middle schooler. He still calls people names and insults their families. What’s worse is that his supporters feel like this aspect of his personality will make him a good president. As if treating people like garbage is something to be proud of.
Bullying and hurting other people is not something to be proud of and it certainly isn’t a trait we need in our president. So, remember this and every other insult Donald Trump dealt to people in our country when you go to the polls in November and cast your ballot for Hillary Clinton.
