Micheal Reagan says that the Republican party has drifted so far from its core message that even his father Ronald Reagan would not have been able to support the party’s candidate in this election. President Reagan has become a sort of mascot for the Republican party in recent years. It’s basically a right of passage for Republican presidential candidates to drudge the poor man up and insist that what they’re doing is basically just an extension of what Mr. Reagan had in mind for America back in the 1980’s. It’s pretty easy to put words in someone’s mouth once they’re dead; MLK knows what I’m talking about.

His brother Ronald Reagan Jr. has already said on numerous occasions that he thinks Trump is a charlatan and that his campaign is a scam. But Ronald Jr. is famously liberal and an “unabashed atheist.” He filmed a television ad for the Freedom from Religion Foundation back in 2009 that made a lot of people pretty upset and wound up being banned from many major networks. So there’s little hope that many conservatives will take what he has to heart when it comes to Trump. In their minds, he’s already cried wolf one too many times.
But Michael is not his brother Ronald. He’s much more like his father in terms of ideology and has even gone to bat for several Republican presidents. Not just the nice well-mannered kind that were so popular back in the 90’s. Even notorious obstructionist Newt Gingrich got his endorsement despite his being a more mannered version of Trump with a wider vocabulary and some sense of what you can’t say on television. So this isn’t a Reagan son in name only. This is the guy who basically inherited the right to tell us what his father thinks. Because the guy thinks just like him.
Not only is he willing to bet that his father would reject America’s racist reality star gone politician but he’s willing to bet that his mother Nancy Reagan wouldn’t buy the nonsense either. He says she would vote for Hillary. Unfortunately, Nancy Reagan passed away earlier this year; Trump then famously commented that “she was never very beautiful” just after the funeral. Because that’s all women are good for in his mind.
But even if you have reservations about Hillary and what her vision for America might look like, Reagan argues that America needs her to become president. She’s the only real option. You can minimize her impact by voting for Republicans down ticket, he says:
This is the sort of cooperation that we need among the parties in America. If we’re never willing to break ranks then we are doomed to see the worst that each side has to offer. But if we can admit when our own candidate is basically no candidate at all. And if we can accept a compromise like electing an opponent like Clinton who won’t destroy our country even if we cannot agree with some of her plans. Then we might actually have a shot at making America great again. Even if we still have a lot of fighting to do over some of the details.
