Melania Trump’s speech at the Republican National Convention is garnering a firestorm of controversy after it appears that a significant section was plagiarized from Michelle Obama’s speech at the Democratic convention in 2008. At this point, the error is so mind-boggling that it’s hard to know where to place the blame. The speech offered by the wife of the GOP presidential nominee has been put through plagiarism detectors as well as being scrutinized by journalists. One might be willing to think that someone threw the wannabe First Lady under the bus, but that may not be the case. Melania appears to be the culprit.
As the delegate roll call took place, NBC News’ Hallie Jackson provided MSNBC viewers an update to the parallel story of Melania Trump’s alleged plagiarism of Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic National Convention speech on Monday night.
Trump’s campaign maintained on Tuesday that Melania’s speech was not plagiarized, however Jackson reported the GOP nominee’s wife added the cribbed bits after accomplished speechwriter Matt Scully — hired to write the speech — turned in his draft.
JUST IN: @HallieJackson reports the draft of speech submitted by Melania's speechwriter, Matt Scully, did NOT include questionable passages.

What this reveals is that the speechwriter, Matt Scully, was not at fault, thus putting aside any ideas of a sabotage from an insider. At first glance, Melania appears to be highly intelligent, but when we take a closer look, putting aside the fact that she speaks five languages (something that’s not uncommon for those who live abroad), one has to question why the Republican National Convention lied about her degree — a claim which has been debunked. Degrees don’t make people intelligent but fabrications of obtaining one through hard work isn’t a smart move.
Melania has been widely mocked on social media since her speech at the RNC in Cleveland just yesterday. Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Republicans tried to blame Hillary Clinton for Melania’s plagiarism. We can understand why Ms. Trump admires Michelle Obama because we, too, feel that history will look back fondly on her and her husband.
Melania may have a hard time getting over this humiliating situation. I suggest we send her and her husband some bootstraps.
