In response to a bad thing happening, a good thing happened. In an Albuquerque, New Mexico Smith’s grocery store Thursday, shoppers defended a woman who was being accosted by another woman who called her a “terrorist” simply because she was wearing a hijab. The woman screamed at her so loudly that it got the attention of the other customers in the store, according to KRQE News 13.
Barney Lopez was in the store at around 9:30 a.m. and recalled passing the woman who was wearing a headscarf as she was checking out.
“I went down the aisle to go get sodas and then all of a sudden I hear somebody starting to yell at her,” Lopez said. “They’re saying things like ‘Get out of our country, you don’t belong here, you’re a terrorist!’”
Lopez said that almost everyone in the store stopped what they were doing and ran to defend the woman who was being verbally accosted by a woman wearing a hat and sunglasses. Lopez took a picture of the woman. An employee at Smith’s appears to be standing between the two women to protect the victim.
“There was even another woman that like went over to the woman in the hijab and put her arm around her and gave her hug and held her while the Smith’s employees came,” Lopez said.
More employees intervened, trying to get the shout-y, rage-y woman out of the store. The woman left the store and went to her car to wait for the woman wearing the headscarf to come out.
Then something amazing happened. “So all the Smith’s employees gathered around this woman and escorted her to her car and helped her load her groceries,” Lopez said.
“At the end, I felt like really hopeful and proud of the community that everybody banded together,” he added.
A manager confirmed to KRQE that the incident did happen. The manager of the store called the woman in the hijab ‘strong’ in the face of the verbal attacker.
The woman wearing the hijab came back to the store later to thank all of the employees for coming to her aid.
How brave of the woman to hide behind sunglasses and a hat while demeaning a woman for wearing a hijab.
