On Friday afternoon, America was treated to leaked video proving the Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is sexually assaults women. The tape revealed Trump saying that because he is famous he feels like he can do whatever he wants to women and they “will let him” even if he “grabs them by the pussy.” For many
people Republicans this was a shocking revelation, but for one of Trump’s former business partners the audio was vindication.
Nearly twenty years ago Jill Harth filed a lawsuit against Trump alleging he attempted to rape her. After a business meeting between herself, Trump and her husband in 1997, the self-proclaimed billionaire took the couple on a tour of his Mar-a-Lago estate. At some point Harth said Trump pushed her into a child’s bedroom and sexually assaulted her:
He pushed me up against the wall, and had his hands all over me and tried to get up my dress again and I had to physically say: ‘What are you doing? Stop it.’ It was a shocking thing to have him do this because he knew I was with George, he knew they were in the next room. And how could he be doing this when I’m there for business?
Eventually Harth dropped her lawsuit in order to settle a different lawsuit that was filed after Trump refused to pay her and her husband money he owed them and she tried to put it behind her, even though she’d been branded a liar. Unfortunately, in May of this year he allegations were once again made public after The New York Times published an article about Trump’s treatment of women. Harth eventually spoke to the Guardian about her experience with the billionaire and said that after the Times article was published his campaign reached out to her:
His office – and I have it on my voicemails that he called, that they called – they asked me to recant everything when the New York Times article came out. They were trying to get me to say it never happened and I made it up. And I said I’m not doing that,” she recalled. Trump’s office denied this.
She was further upset by an interview Trump’s daughter Ivanka gave in the wake of the New York Times article saying her dad is “not a groper”.
“I understand that the girl wanted to defend her dad, being it’s her dad,” she said, “but what did she know? She was 10 years old! She was 10 years old at the time. She didn’t know what her father was about, what he was doing, how he was acting.
This woman was subjected to years of attacks on her reputation because she dared to defend herself against a man who she said sexually assaulted her. And she would have had to continue to defend herself had it not been for this leaked video. I have heard a lot of Trump supporters on television and the internet trying to explain away his deplorable behavior and trying to deflect by talking about former President Bill Clinton and it’s disgusting. This man, who is running for president of the United States, did not just say something stupid, he talked about how he has systematically sexually assaulted women whom he believes are attractive and there is proof that he has done this. This behavior is indefensible and frankly, he should be in prison if he goes around grabbing women “by the pussy.”
