It seems that every announcement Donald Trump makes about who he is choosing to serve in the most powerful positions of his administration is worse than the last. He has done it once again by reportedly offering the position of national security adviser to Lt. Gen. Michael T. Flynn, an anti-immigrant Islamaphobe who is buddies with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Flynn served as chief of the Defense Intelligence Agency for only two years before he was fired. But Trump could care less because Flynn backed him when everyone else involved national security (who wasn’t batshit crazy) called him out as unfit to serve as president.
The retired intelligence officer is wholeheartedly convinced that Shariah, or Islamic law, is taking over the country. It isn’t, but like Trump, he doesn’t really care about things like facts. He has said that the U.S. needs to work with Putin because we are in the middle of a “world war” with Islamist militants. “He [Trump] knows that when it comes to Russia or any other country, the common enemy that we all have is radical Islam,” Flynn said shortly before the election.

Flynn has a long history with Putin and Russia, as well as several other foreign governments around the world. The NY Times reports:
The Flynn Intel Group, a consulting firm he founded after he was fired by President Obama as head of the Defense Intelligence Agency, has hazy business ties to Middle Eastern countries and has appeared to lobby for the Turkish government. General Flynn also took a paid speaking engagement last year with Russia Today, a television network funded by the Kremlin, and attended the network’s lavish anniversary party in Moscow, where he sat at Mr. Putin’s elbow.
According to Flynn, the secret to defeating terrorism is to label it “radical Islamic terrorism.” In an interview a few weeks before the election, he sad that referring to it by any other name is “the worst kind of political correctness.” He does not speak of Islam as a religion, but rather as a political ideology. At times, he has even described Islam as a cancer.

Flynn is also supportive of throwing up as many roadblocks as possible for people immigrating from Muslim countries and requiring them to register with the federal government.
Sarah Chayes of the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, worked with Flynn when he was in charge of military intelligence in Afghanistan between 2009 and 2011. She said that “he is a very talented information gatherer.”
But his thinking process is not sufficiently analytical to test some streams against others and make sense of it, or draw consistent conclusions. If you listen to him, in 10 minutes you’ll hear him contradict himself two or three times.
Flynn has not yet responded to requests for comment and so far, he has not officially responded to Trump’s offer.
