Donald Trump made a mysterious announcement on New Year’s Eve, claiming that he knows “things that other people don’t know” about the consensus among U.S. intelligence agencies, that Russia interfered in our elections through hacking. He promised to reveal this information “on Tuesday or Wednesday,” according to the New York Times.
Trump issued forth yet another word salad that makes it hard to know what exactly he’s talking about—and this could certainly just be another tease that never comes to fruition, much like his promise to announce a plan to separate himself from his business empire. (Which never happened.)
I just want them to be sure because it’s a pretty serious charge. If you look at the weapons of mass destruction, that was a disaster, and they were wrong. So I want them to be sure. I think it’s unfair if they don’t know.
And I know a lot about hacking. And hacking is a very hard thing to prove. So it could be somebody else. And I also know things that other people don’t know, and so they cannot be sure of the situation.”
Trump, a true Luddite, also advised “It’s very important, if you have something really important, write it out and have it delivered by courier, the old-fashioned way,” ignoring that this is cost prohibitive for most people, but also that he is essentially advocating for a repeal of the technological revolution.
But don’t worry. Trump has a 10-year old son who knows all about this stuff:
I don’t care what they say, no computer is safe. I have a boy who’s 10 years old; he can do anything with a computer. You want something to really go without detection, write it out and have it sent by courier.”
All of this follows Trump’s warm praise of Putin after current President of the United States, Barack Obama, issued sanctions against Russia that were praised by Republicans and Democrats alike, including Paul Ryan and John McCain. Trump felt differently, tweeting “Great move on delay (by V. Putin) – I always knew he was very smart!” after Putin refrained from taking retaliatory actions.
