There has been no shortage of reports and video footage since the election of Trump supporters acting out their racist feelings. But this is the first where people are actually putting on KKK robes. To be clear none of the men seen in the video are actually members of the Klan. They were simply so excited by the election of Donald Trump that they were inspired to pose as Klansmen during their election party.
The video was originally assumed to be from Stafford but it was traced by State Police back to East Windsor. If anything can be more disturbing than the fact that these people found it appropriate to dress this way in the first place the response from some online is a close runner up. They describe those in the video as simply “kids” and dismiss their behavior as just “partying.”
The police at least seem to be taking the incident seriously. State police say they’re still investigating the incident and considering charges for some of the men.
Det. Sgt. Matthew Carl had this to say about the incident:
This was not a KKK planned rally,” Carl said. “This was a party. … That being said we’re not diminishing what had actually happened at the party. … We denounce it, it’s disgusting, it’s deplorable.
He went on to say that those identified will be charged with any applicable offense:
We will apply any charges that are applicable under state statute to anyone that was at the party that we can positively identity. With the sentiment of the country and the things that have been going on … we do not want anyone to think that the police department is taking this matter lightly.
These charges will mostly amount to nothing more than trespassing and underage drinking. But the police are determined to make an example of anyone who sees Trump’s election as an excuse to turn back the clock on American values.
