CNN is playing a dangerous game by inviting surrogates from the campaign to be regulars on all of their programming. Perhaps, in times past, it wouldn’t have been as much of a gamble. But Trump and those he associates with are in no way pre-filtered and in fact the billionaire and former reality star seems to deliberately seek out the insane. Or at least those willing to sound insane to draw crowds.
Take Jeffrey Lord, who has made the argument before that Democrats need to apologize for slavery. Though to my knowledge he’s never, before today, looked an African American in the face and demanded they apologize (to him?) for slavery. But never say never about anyone within the Trump campaign.
Bakari Sellers accused another conservative of being “unwilling to talk about race,” and in the process demanded that Trump apologize for his comments about the Central Park Five. Talk of apologies was more than Lord could take it would seem and he demanded that Sellers apologize – no really – for slavery.
The entire room erupted in awkward laughter and then proceeded on to another subject. The comment was so obscure and short-lived that you almost miss it, and there’s no doubt that some in the room were hoping that we would. There have been more on-air fights on CNN since they’ve been inviting Trump’s surrogates as regular guests and I don’t think any of them were hoping for another one.
But that’s what you get when you invite crazy, xenophobic individuals into the discussion as if they’re just normal political pundits. At the end of this election we’re all going to have to do a lot of soul-searching; the media and the Republican party especially. Perhaps this is a good place to start that conversation. How is it possible in 2016 that a white man asked a black man to apologize for slavery on CNN and just got a bunch of awkward shrugs?
