Donald Trump will be receiving his first classified briefing on Wednesday and he will be joined by one of his advisors , who just happens to appear on the Russian state television channel RT on a regular basis. In fact, he was even one of the speakers at the network’s 10th Anniversary shindig.
According to the Huffington Post, former Defense Intelligence Agency chief Michael Flynn will be tagging along to the briefing. He spoke at last month’s Republican National Convention and has been an avid supporter of Trump since early on. So far so good.
But things get a little stickier when you take into consideration Flynn’s ties to Russia. Politico reported that Flynn sat only two seats away from Russian President Vladimir Putin at an event for Russia Today, which is now known as RT. An anonymous source, described as a former Pentagon official, described Flynn’s presence at the occasion as “extremely odd.”
It was extremely odd that [Flynn] showed up in a tuxedo to the Russian government propaganda arm’s party.
Flynn was reported to be a vice presidential contender earlier this year. At the time, the retired general was described by Vox as having “an odd affection” for Putin. The publication also noted that when it comes to RT, “Secretary of State John Kerry calls the network a ‘propaganda bullhorn‘ for Putin.”
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will also be attending on Wednesday. Both he and Flynn were required to get special security clearances in order to be permitted to attend the briefing, but their attendance is reason to believe that the meeting likely won’t be too detailed.
David Priess, a former CIA official, said that Wednesday’s briefing won’t go in depth. “It’s intended to be an overview of the hotspots around the globe,” said Priess. “It’s not intended to be absolutely comprehensive.” Ongoing covert operations being conducted by the U.S. and intelligence gathering methods will not be included in the information that will be covered.
Hopefully, when Trump walks into his first intelligence briefing with this Russian stooge fast on his heels, those conducting the briefing will follow the advice of Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid. What were Reid’s words of wisdom? He suggested they just make shit up rather than reveal any actual classified information, because chances are, any information they give Trump and his buddies is going to end up in Putin’s hands.
