Trump University, the for-profit institution that has gotten Donald Trump sued for fraud, promised students that they would give them the keys to unlocking financial success. Turns out, one of those keys was to target the disabled and exploit them to make a quick buck.
According to Mother Jones:
One particular course offered by Trump U presented a particularly blunt strategy for making money: target destitute, ‘completely disabled’ homeowners headed into foreclosure and convince them to sell their homes at a discounted price. That is, exploit disabled people for profit.
The 2006 course, titled “Real Estate Goldmine: How to Get Rich Investing in Pre-Foreclosures,” is an audio lesson that runs almost three hours and is paired with a workbook. Trump University’s Jon Ward interviews real estate investment adviser Gary Eldred about how to best take advantage of desperate homeowners who are facing foreclosures. Throughout the course, he gives tips for how to spot homeowners who are in pre-forclosure and how to convince them to sell their homes at a discounted price. He reminds students that these homeowners are going through a stressful time, so you should be kind when speaking to them if you want to have the best chance at ripping them off.
Eldred also covers ” how to take advantage of short sales—a deal in which a buyer talks the homeowner into selling and convinces the mortgage lender to reduce the seller’s debt.” He points out that in order to convince a lender to agree to a short sale, you have to be able to make the case that the borrower will never be able to be able to pay back the loan as is.
Under no circumstance will a lender accept a short sale if they think they can squeeze that borrower for an extra nickel, so certified destitution evidence needs to be included,” he explains. He lists the conditions that are ideal for a short sale: “The borrower is out of work, the borrower has $50,000 in unpaid medical claims, the borrow is completely disabled, the borrower has an extraordinarily messy divorce where everything has been squandered.
Eldred argues throughout the course that this is an inevitable part of the economy. During the course’s introduction, Trump makes a similar remark that is so despicable it is downright nauseating:
The sad fact is, more and more property owners are getting themselves in trouble!” Trump says. “Defaulting on mortgages and losing their homes or commercial properties. I’m sorry for them, but life goes on, and the fact is, one person’s misfortune is someone else’s opportunity. That’s just the way the world works. This program shows you how to make a lot of money from investing in pre-foreclosures.
What kind of disgusting human being considers it a good business practice to prey on the disabled? The same kind that mocks the disabled on the campaign trail for calling out his bullsh*t lies about seeing thousands of Muslims cheering at the fall of the twin towers on 9/11. You really don’t get any lower than this.
