President Obama did not watch the RNC Convention this week because he doesn’t have time for bullshit.
But when he was asked questions about it by reporters, Obama did not hold back his disgust of Trump’s pessimistic view of America and his choice to fearmonger instead of adhering to the facts.
“The Republicans had an opportunity this week to share their vision with the country,” Obama began. “I did not watch the convention…I got a lot of stuff to do. But I did read some of what was said.”
“This idea that America is somehow on the verge of collapse, this vision of violence and chaos everywhere, doesn’t really jibe with the experience of most people,” Obama continued, expressing hope that Americans walked out their doors this morning and noticed that birds are chirping and the sun is out and America is not a charred pile of ruins.
“I think it is important to be absolutely clear here. Some of the fears that were expressed throughout the week just don’t jibe with the facts,” Obama said before giving an example of how Republicans are misleading the people with fear.
“When it comes to crime, the violent crime rate in America has been lower during my presidency than any time in the last three, four decades. And although it is true we’ve seen an uptick in murders and violent crime in some cities this year, the fact of the matter is the murder rate today, the violence rate today is far lower than it was when Ronald Reagan was president, and lower than when I took office.”
President Obama said that Republicans are basically making their claims by looking through the lens of the recent shootings of police officers and they hope to capitalize on those shooting in order to portray America as a violent place that is getting worse when it actually is not. IN fact, President Obama mentioned that even police are safer since he took office.
President Obama also made it clear that the government has put unprecedented resources at the border to keep immigration orderly and legal and stressed that we should allow fear to dictate our policy.
“We’re not going to make good decisions based on fears that don’t have a basis in fact. And that, I think, is something that I hope all Americans pay attention to.”
Here’s the video via YouTube. President Obama’s remarks start from the beginning.
Indeed, President Obama was correct to say that there is less violence in America today. The statistics prove that he is right when it comes to the number of police officers being killed every year. That statistic is tremendously lower than when Reagan was in office.
Clearly, Republicans are getting their misinformation from conservative media outlets such as Fox News, which thrive on fearmongering while relying very little or not at all on actual facts. Because if they actually looked at the facts and reported the facts they would not be able to keep their viewers perpetually frightened and perpetually right-wing.
Donald Trump becoming president would make fear an every day reality because he would use it constantly in order to get what he wants. This is why America cannot afford to have such a man in the White House. We need a rational person who doesn’t make decisions out of fear. We need someone in office who makes decisions after gathering all the information and facts. That person is not Donald Trump.
