Matt Lauer did this country no favors on Wednesday night by helping Trump brag about how big of a fan Russian President Vladamir Putin is of him, but unlike Rachel Maddow on Thursday, Lauer did not do his homework.
“Well, I think when he calls me brilliant, I’ll take the compliment, OK?” Trump said when Lauer mentioned that Putin allegedly called the Republican nominee “a brilliant leader.”
Hillary Clinton slammed Trump’s preference of Putin over the American president and invoked Ronald Reagan to show how insulting and unpatriotic it is for Trump to prefer the Russian president who is basically a dictator.
Republicans are struggling in their handling of Trump’s infatuation with Putin, which seems to stem directly from Trump’s perception that Putin really likes him.
Despite using that word, “brilliant,” it didn’t mean what Trump thinks it means.
Because during her show the very next night, Rachel Maddow was really annoyed about having to debunk this bullshit and actually looked into the Russian translation based on what Putin supposedly said.
“This is an election year where the Republican Party is running as their candidate for president a candidate who is so self-centered and narcissistic that a flippant — and apparently misquoted — compliment from another foreign leader was enough to put enough stars in his eyes that the Republican Party’s presidential nominee now really does say that he prefers the president of Russia to the president of the United States. This is crazy. And it’s irrelevant. But this is the highest level of our politics right now.”
So just to recap, Trump prefers Putin because Putin allegedly kissed his ass.
But that’s not what happened according to Putin himself. As Maddow pointed out, Putin disputed Trump’s delusional claim earlier this year during an interview on CNN. “I only said that he is a bright person,” Putin explained. “Isn’t he bright?”
Maddow dug deep into her Russian to English dictionary and noted that if Putin wanted to refer to Trump’s intelligence as “brilliant” he would have used the word “blestiashchlii” instead of the adjective “yarkii,” which means flamboyant.
In short, Putin doesn’t think Trump is “brilliant,” just an asshole peacock who tries to get attention.
But Maddow was not thrilled to be talking about this topic.
“It really shouldn’t matter,” Maddow said. “On the one hand, who cares? On the other hand, we now have to. Because this is an election where the Republican presidential campaign at the number-one online ‘debunker’ of 9/11 and the Oklahoma City bombing and the Challenger disaster, and the Aurora movie theater massacre, and the Sandy Hook shootings, and the Boston bombings because ‘all of those things didn’t really happen — they’re all government conspiracy theories.’”

And she is right. Donald Trump really should have been disqualified from running for president on the very first day he threw his hat in the ring. But despite all the nasty things he has said, all the lies he has peddled, and all the times he has praised Putin while trashing President Obama and saying America isn’t great, conservatives still support him and are making this election far closer than it should be. Trump should be losing by a landslide right now but he isn’t because his supporters lost their damn minds a long time ago and all they want to do is watch the world burn, including the United States. They don’t care about this country and its future. They only care about themselves and their hate. In the end, Trump’s stupid supporters are the real threat to our nation.
As John F. Kennedy once said, “The ignorance of one voter in a democracy impairs the security of all.”
And unfortunately, there are a lot of ignorant voters this year.
