During an appearance on Meet The Press on Sunday, Chuck Todd wanted to know what the Republican nominee thinks about former KKK Grand Wizard David Duke running for a Senate seat in Louisiana.
“David Duke announced his Senate candidacy claiming your agenda for his own, or essentially saying glad that you spoke out,” Todd informed Trump.
Indeed, Duke has been one of Trump’s biggest supporters and has thanked Trump for bringing his racist nativist views into the mainstream. In fact, Trump is the reason why Duke thinks he can win a Senate race in Louisiana.
“Newt Gingrich said, every Republican should repudiate this guy no matter what he says,” Todd continued.
And then Trump spoke up.
“I did and I do,” Trump responded.
But Todd didn’t back down. He asked Trump if would actually support the Democrat opposing Duke. And Trump’s had a hard time choosing between the guy who once said, “White people don’t need a law against rape, but if you fill this room up with your normal black bucks, you would, because n***ers are basically primitive animals,” and “Our clear goal must be the advancement of the white race and separation of the white and black races,” or the Democrat who has never said anything like that.
TODD: “Would you support a Democrat over David Duke, if that was what was necessary to defeat him?”
TRUMP: “I guess, depending on who the Democrat, but the answer would be yes. Look, the answer is, as quick as you can say it — rebuked. Is that OK? Rebuked.”
Here’s the video via YouTube Trump’s remarks on Duke are at the 14 minute mark.
This should have been an easy question but Trump struggled with it because white supremacists are major supporters of his campaign. The fact that a Republican presidential candidate has to face these questions at all is embarrassing.
