When ISIS falls in utter defeat there better not be a single Republican trying to take credit for it. President Obama did this without their help.
For years, Republicans have whined about how President Obama is supposedly not doing enough to defeat ISIS, even though they refuse to use their power to declare war since they control Congress. Because of that refusal, President Obama has had to fight ISIS himself using limited resources and limited powers.
Airstrikes and drones have been the favored strategy along with working with our allies to get the job done. It has taken time, but his effort is paying off.
According to the Washington Post, ISIS is admitting that their power in the Middle East is quickly fading and they may have to go underground soon since their remaining strongholds could soon be retaken,
“Even as it launches waves of terrorist attacks around the globe, the Islamic State is quietly preparing its followers for the eventual collapse of the caliphate it proclaimed with great fanfare two years ago,” the Post reports.
In public messages and in recent actions in Syria, the group’s leaders are acknowledging the terrorist organization’s declining fortunes on the battlefield while bracing for the possibility that its remaining strongholds could fall…The loss of a physical sanctuary would constitute a major blow to the Islamic State — severely limiting, for example, its ability to raise money, train recruits or plan complex terrorist operations…
Because ISIS is not a centralized organization, however, the terrorist group will still be a dangerous threat for some time, but their operation will be driven into the shadows.
Two years ago, ISIS controlled a large portion of territory in the Middle east ranging from Syria through Iraq, but now it has been reduced to trying to hold on to a few city strongholds and even those have been conceding over the last six weeks may not hold out much longer.
“A remarkable editorial last month in al-Naba, the Islamic State’s weekly Arabic newsletter, offered a gloomy assessment of the caliphate’s prospects, acknowledging the possibility that all its territorial holdings could ultimately be lost,” the Post reports.
The editorial, titled, “The Crusaders’ Illusions in the Age of the Caliphate,” sought to rally the group’s followers by insisting that the Islamic State would continue to survive, even if all its cities fell to the advancing “crusaders” — the separate Western- and Russian-backed forces arrayed against them.
In short, ISIS is getting their asses kicked so they are acting tough while also trying to soften the blows defeat will create when followers of the “caliphate” realize that their great crusade failed.
And President Obama is a huge reason why ISIS is starting to fall apart. 26,000 ISIS fighters have been killed over the last two years by U.S. and coalition forces. In addition, airstrikes have taken out roughly half of the commanders ISIS has at its disposal. And aided by the U.S. Air Force, Iraqi soldiers on the ground have managed to take back many cities ISIS had previously captured.
So the next time you hear a Republican claiming that President Obama is weak against ISIS, you’ll know they are full of shit.
